How v404 handles your data

Where your data lives

v404 runs on your own Mac. Your conversations, files and agent memory are stored on that Mac. The two servers we are building, described below, are designed to keep none of this content.

What goes to the model provider

v404 does not run its own model. Your message is sent to a model provider for processing, along with whatever v404 reads to answer it: files, web pages, earlier messages in the conversation, and your Mail and Messages. Each night v404 also sends every new mail thread and text from the sources you turn on, so the model can sort them and draft replies.

With a plan that includes the models, each request goes through the v404 gateway, a server we run, which counts your usage and forwards the request to Fireworks AI. For each request the gateway records your account, the time, the model, the token counts and the cost. The gateway is still being built, and it is designed to keep none of the text of your requests.

If you add your own API key, requests go to the provider that key belongs to, for example Anthropic or OpenAI. That provider's own privacy policy covers what it does with them.

Three features send data to other services. Web search, and web research that v404 does overnight, send search terms to a web search service, which this page will name before the beta. Live voice sends your speech to OpenAI's Realtime service, even when another provider handles chat. Dictation into the text box runs on your device and sends no audio.

Reaching your Mac when you are away from home

When your iPhone or iPad is away from your home Wi-Fi, it will reach your Mac through a relay service we run. The relay is still being built. Before it carries anyone's messages, we will publish its protocol, including what the relay can read.

The relay will see the connection details it needs to route that traffic: IP addresses, connection times, your device and pairing IDs, and message sizes. It will keep them in abuse and reliability logs for a set period and then delete them. This page will state that period before the relay opens.

On your home Wi-Fi, your iPhone and Mac will be able to connect directly without the relay.

Pre-orders and payment

Pre-orders are not open yet. When they open, this page will name the payment provider that handles them. You will enter your card on its page, and we will never see or store your card number. It will send us your name, email address and the amount paid so we can confirm your pre-order and contact you about it.

What this website collects

This website sets no cookies and loads no analytics or tracking scripts. Cloudflare hosts the site and gives us total visit counts from its server logs. Cloudflare also processes standard request data, such as your IP address, to deliver the pages. Its own privacy policy covers that.
